This month's rail, shelf by shelf

I buy in small numbers from makers I've met, so when a colour goes, it's usually gone. If something below has your name on it, ring before you set out and I'll check your size is still here.

Inside the shop: shelves of folded knitwear, a centre table of new stock and rails on both walls

Ården linen midi dress

£75, sizes 8 to 16

Three colours this week, including the deep olive that sold out in June. Washes at home and gets softer every year.

In the shop now

The wool overshirt

£89, two colours

Warm enough for November, light enough for the school run. Cut generous, so size down if you're between.

In the shop now

Osby lambswool crew

£68, six colours

The jumper people come back for a second of. Spun and knitted at one small mill, and it shows in the wear.

In the shop now

Ården wide leg trousers

£64, sizes 8 to 18

The pair I wear behind the counter most days. High waist, deep pockets, and they hang beautifully from the first wash.

In the shop now

Mabel & Grey cotton socks

£9 a pair, three for £24

Thick enough for boots, bright enough to cheer up a Tuesday. The mustard ones go first, every time.

Lane Ceramics tumblers

£18 each, four glazes

Thrown by hand, so no two sit quite the same. They go in the dishwasher, honestly.

In the shop now

Lane Ceramics serving bowls

£42, two sizes

Big enough for a Saturday salad, handsome enough to leave out all week. The speckled glaze is new this month.

In the shop now

Field & Fen candles

£26, three scents

Fig leaf is the one people come back for, usually holding the empty jar. Around 40 hours of burn.

In the shop now

The card wall

£3.50 each

Letterpressed birthday, new baby, sorry, and just because. I'll write it and post it for you if you're pushed.

Stems on the counter, Fridays

£7 a bunch, cut on Friday morning by the grower two villages over and wrapped in brown paper while you wait. When they're gone, they're gone, usually by two.

Fridays only

Womenswear runs 8 to 18 across the rail. If your size isn't out, ask: I can usually have it in the shop within the week.

The brands carried

Five makers, chosen slowly

I've met every maker on this list, most of them in their own workshops. I buy twice a year, in small numbers, and I only reorder what I'd wear or keep myself. That's the whole buying policy.

If you love a label I don't carry, tell me at the counter. Half of what's on this list started as a customer's suggestion.

  • Osby Knit Co.Lambswool spun and knitted at one small mill. Jumpers from £68 that outlast three cheap ones.
  • ÅrdenLinen dresses and trousers you can wash at home. Cut for real waists, sizes 8 to 18.
  • Lane CeramicsTumblers, bowls and vases thrown by hand two counties away. Dishwasher safe, every piece.
  • Field & FenSoy candles poured in small batches. Three scents, about 40 hours of burn in each.
  • Mabel & GreyCotton socks and soft accessories in colours that actually go with things.

Held for 48 hours

See it, sleep on it, it stays yours

Half the point of a small shop is that nobody hurries you. If you want to think about a piece, it comes off the rail and waits for you. No deposit, no awkwardness.

Ask, or ring

Point at it in the shop, or ring 01234 555 316 about anything on this page. I'll check the size while you're on the phone.

2

It comes off the rail

Your piece goes behind the counter with your name pinned to it. It won't be sold, whoever asks after it.

3

You've got 48 hours

Come in and try it on with no queue for the fitting room. Change your mind? It goes back out, and nobody minds.

Thanks, that's you on the list. This page is a Shopfront Studio showcase, so the form isn't connected here.
