The shop Ray built
Ray Fenwick opened at 22 Market Street with two chairs, a kettle and a pole he fitted himself. Thirty nine years later his son cuts in the same spot, and most of what Ray put on the wall is still on the wall.
Ray opens the shop with two chairs and a price list that topped out at £2.50. The opening day photo is still by the till.
The league table goes up next to the mirror. It has never been updated and never will be. Regulars check it anyway.
Danny starts Saturdays, aged thirteen, sweeping hair and learning which regular takes which biscuit.
Ray hands over the keys. Danny takes the shop on and changes nothing except the till, on Ray's firm advice.
Marco joins and the third chair goes in. The word fade starts appearing in the booking book.
Ryan finishes his apprenticeship in the shop and takes chair three. For the first time, all three chairs run at once on Saturdays.
Still here, still cutting. The queue on Saturday morning still goes out the door, and the kettle has only been replaced twice.
